Why most consoles fail (and what we actually do)

Console repair isn’t generic computer repair. Each console has a handful of known failure modes — some hardware, some firmware, some component-level. We see the same ten or so issues every week and we know exactly how to fix each of them.

The HDMI port is the #1 failure across PlayStation and Xbox. It’s a tiny soldered connector that takes the strain when someone trips over the cable. Black screen with the console running fine? Almost always the HDMI port. Replaceable on-site.

Overheating kills PS4s and PS5s. PS5 specifically uses liquid metal on the main chip that dries out and migrates over time, causing thermal shutdown and rough fan noise. We reapply liquid metal with the proper isolation walls so it doesn’t short anything.

The PS5 disc drive has a known mechanism issue where it won’t accept or eject discs. The whole drive module is a single swap.

The Nintendo Switch M92T36 chip handles power management behind the charging port. When a cheap charger sends a voltage spike, this chip fries. The Switch then won’t charge even though the port itself looks fine. Replaceable with the right tools.

Recent console repair examples

The PS5 that wouldn’t accept a disc. Teen couldn’t load any games. Failed disc drive (known PS5 mechanism issue). Replaced the drive module on-site, tested with three different games, console back up before dinner.

The PS5 with chronic overheating. Console would run for 20 minutes then shut off mid-game. Cause: dried-out liquid metal that had migrated off the main chip. Disassembled at the customer’s house, removed and re-isolated the chip, applied fresh liquid metal with proper containment walls. Console now stable for hours of gaming.

The Xbox Series X with a black screen. Console powered on (fan running, controller paired), but TV stayed black. HDMI port crushed from cable strain. Desoldered the old port, soldered a new one in place. Picture restored, fully working.

The Switch with Error 2101-0001. Family’s Switch wouldn’t charge. Error code points to a corrupted i2c communication with the M92T36 power management IC. Replaced the chip on the board, Switch charged on the first plug-in. Tested all charging modes (dock, USB-C handheld).

The Joy-Con with drift. Mario Kart character kept turning left even when the stick was centered. Replaced the analog stick assembly on-site — back to centered, full control restored.

What makes console repair different from generic shop work

A lot of repair shops do consoles as a side gig — cleaning, fan replacement, basic stuff. Component-level board work (HDMI ports, M92T36 chips) needs different equipment and experience.

We have the soldering rework station, microscope needed for board-level console repair. That means we can fix things most chain stores will tell you to replace the whole console for.

It also means we can give you a real diagnosis, on-site, in front of you — not a flat-rate “won’t even look at it unless you pay $X” quote.

What it costs

Honest quote after diagnosis. We call with the price before any work starts.

You approve before we touch anything. No surprise bills.

Diagnostic fee applies if we can’t fix it or you decline the repair. If we do the fix, you only pay for the fix.

Console Repair FAQ

What consoles do you repair?

PlayStation 4 (all variants), PlayStation 5 (disc and digital), Xbox One (all variants), Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X, Nintendo Switch (original, OLED, and Lite).

How fast can you fix a PS5 disc drive?

PS5 disc drive replacement is a shop repair — timing depends on parts availability.

My Xbox shows a black screen but powers on. Is it dead?

Almost certainly not. That’s the classic HDMI port failure — the port is soldered to the board and can be replaced. Console is fine, just needs a new port.

My PS5 is loud and shutting off mid-game. What’s wrong?

Almost always the liquid metal on the main chip has dried out and migrated. We reapply liquid metal with proper isolation. Console runs cool and quiet after the repair.

My Nintendo Switch shows Error 2101-0001. Can you fix it?

Yes. That error code points to the M92T36 power management chip. We replace the chip and test all charging modes (dock and handheld) before handing it back.

What areas do you serve?

Beebe, Cabot, Ward, Austin, and Searcy. Pickup timing depends on our schedule. Turnaround for the repair depends on parts.

Console down? We’ll come fix it.

Mobile pickup & drop-off on most console repairs. PS5, Xbox, Switch and more.
